My Day Off

Today is my day off. I had nasi lemak for breakfast in the morning at La Cucur KLCC and then went back home and continued my sleep until 12.30pm. It was awesome.

And since I was hungry and it’s my day off, I had lunch at Suki-ya.

After lunch I had cake from Komugi.

I also had tea. I love tea. As much as I love Sarawak laksa.

In between these meals I went shopping. Heheheh.

I ended the day with laundry. -_-

And throwing away old laksa gravy that’s been around since raya haji.

Sarawak Laksa Paste and I

 

It is not secret that I am a big fan of Sarawak Laksa. Unfortunately I only found out about it (about being a fan) after I left Kuching to study in KL. So whenever I go back home to Kuching, I would make it a point to eat laksa EVERYDAY. Sometimes twice a day. I am THAT dedicated.

However, despite my love for laksa, I never quite bothered to make it myself. It’s a hassle to make a complete bowl of laksa simply because there are too many condiments to make. There’s eggs, chicken, prawn, daun ketumbar etc. Therefore I prefer to just go to my favorite laksa store and buy. Although occasionally my mom does make laksa at home, like during raya open house or to celebrate me coming home from KL. And whenever we make laksa it’s always from a ready-made paste. I always wondered what’s inside the paste. I knew it contained a lot of herbs and spices, but never really bothered to know what they are exactly, and how it’s made. I just assumed it was a lot of work.

And I was right.

While doing a random google search on Sarawak Laksa (a favorite pastime), I stumbled across this blog entry.

Here it detailed the ingredients and method of cooking the Sarawak laksa paste. As I expected, it contained a long list of ingredients that made me appreciate my laksa heroes even more.

Unexpectedly, the blog owners are Malaysians living in Melbourne, Australia. Malaysia Boleh! Hehehe.

What's Next?

What's next to come in this blog? I don't want to jinx it because I always forget. Anyway, next I am going to addat least five more food places in the directory. I couldn't add them in the previous posts because I couldn't find a link to show them. I would automatically think I'll have to do a post about these places with pictures I took myself, but that's for later. As soon as I have enough info I will add them.

Apart from restaurants and cafes, I will put up my favourite places to buy kek lapis Sarawak (Sarawak layer cake).

And of course, my favourite pisang goreng stalls. Because that's kinda what I do back home. 3.30pm and it's time to go out and hunt for the pisang of the goreng kind.

Kuching Food Directory #2

Today I had help from my sisters to put this list together. Obviously there are still a lot of places I have been completely ignorant of. I need to go back to Kuching and have 5 meals a day at different places to finish this list! Enjoy!

A kopitiam that sells food that should be familiar to all Malaysians. But maybe because it’s close to my favorite Mom’s Laksa outlet, that I never found the motivation to go there. One of these days…

2.      Sepinang Sari

This restaurant is the home of the infamous Mee Sapi Haji Salleh. I ate this a lot as a kid. I didn’t realize that until a few years ago. Among the best beef noodle in the heart of Kuching City.

The link contains an overview of the food. This is one of those places that I haven’t been yet, so I’m definitely checking it out. My sister loves the Caeser Salad here and I am always on the lookout for nice western food in Kuching. So, Simplicious, HERE I COME!!

Kuching Food Directory #1

1.       Mom’s Laksa

BEST. LAKSA SARAWAK. EVER. Also, shop is open early morning for breakfast until 8pm at night. The only laksa Sarawak specialty shop to open all day in Kuching, ever. I LOVE MOM’S LAKSA!

2.       Bing Coffee Company

Bing is like the Coffee Bean of Sarawak and 1000 times better! Their smoothies are rich and thick, their cakes freshly made daily and their paninis are to die for! My favorite is to have banana strawberry smoothie with oreo cheesecake and lamb Panini with extra Panini sauce. There used to be only one outlet in Padungan, but now there’s five outlets to go to. So just go to the one closest to you. Also, Bing’s outlets are all in South Kuching. They open till late and the staff are very cool and friendly.

3.       Madam Tang’s Café

 My favorite here is the laksa Sarawak for when I want to eat laksa in the Kuching South area. Usually I go to Mom’s but during Ramadhan, Mom’s opens late or doesn’t open at all (certain outlets) but Madam Tang opens as usual. Its usual business hours is quite short. Sometimes they run out of laksa by 1pm, so be sure to go here as early as you can because they close at 3pm. Madam Tang also has nice beef noodles. Additionally, Madam Tang runs the “LAKSA” outlet in The Spring shopping mall’s foodcourt. So if you are craving for Madam Tang’s laksa but their outlets ran out, just come to The Spring because here it’s available all day.

4.       Swee Kang

This place is close to my house so it’s very convenient. I love the ice kacang here. My favorite is the Jagung susu ice tambah gula pong. There’s no kacang at all in there. Hahahaha.

5.       Sidewalk Café

Close to the airport. Serves mostly western dish. MUST try pastas next time. Last I went there it was during dusk, so sitting outside, there were lots of mosquitoes.

7.       TopSpot Seafood Food Court

The best place for seafood in the heart of Kuching City. People used to drive all the way to Buntal to get seafood as the ones available here. My favorite shop is shop no. 33 Ling Loong Seafood. The butter prawns are dry and crispy, the service is fast and there’s not a big crowd here like the shops nearer to the lifts.

Hello! Welcome to Sarawak Laksa Love. Despite what the name of this blog suggests, I will not only be talking about Sarawak Laksa but it is the most beautiful heaven in a bowl ever - and my favourite food.

My name is Farah and I am a Sarawakian born and raised in Kuching. After SPM I came to KL to study and eventually work here. I am a retail Executive at Kinokuniya Bookstore, currently in charge of the Travel and Pets sections. Partly because at work I know that there is a severe lack of Kuching-specific travel guides and mostly because I love Kuching and miss it all the time, I thought I should do my part of informing people about my beloved city.

Because I spend more time in KL than in Kuching, the food joints that I normally went too either have already closed down, not as nice anymore, or no longer cool. On Facebook I saw many of my friends eating nice foods that I haven’t tried yet and I asked them where they ate. They are always more than happy to tell me exactly what they ate, and where, and even provided me with the pictures. For that I am eternally grateful. The main purpose of this site is to archive all these food places for my own reference. All of them are halal, but this being Kuching, I will give notice if certain places are mixed halal and non-halal kopitiams. Sarawakian Muslims are very tolerant of eating at these type of mixed restaurants, because we know which stalls are halal. So non-Sarawakians, please take note.

Also, because I also received a lot of queries about Kuching regarding touristy places, I got frustrated that there isn’t a website that has all of my favorite places listed. I shall prioritize free, cheap and convenient places. Mostly places that I would like to visit again. Therefore, I hope this blog will be useful to you as it is to me.
